Many students were disheartened due to the pandemic. In 2022, two years later, a group of 19 students led by Professors Maureen Tobin Stanley and Milagros Gómez in Spain took off for a month in Salamanca on May 31, 2022. This popular faculty-led Study Abroad program has taken dozens of UMD students to Spain since it began more than a decade ago.
Students live with Spanish host families in a 4-week, 6-credit program at one of Europe’s oldest universities Salamanca University He takes classes in, and visits cultural sites in Salamanca, Toledo, Córdoba, and Seville. Classes on subjects such as architecture, history, culture, art, cinema, and language are taught by Salamanca University as well as UMD faculty leaders. Especially popular are the cooking classes with Chef Roberto, where students prepare and eat exclusively traditional Spanish dishes.
After returning from Salamanca and receiving her Bachelors from UMD, Emily Robinette says I chose this program because I wanted to strengthen my skills and knowledge of the Spanish language in a way that a regular classroom could not. I also thought of doing short term faculty led programs as it was my first time outside my country.
Students interested in studying in Salamanca in the summer of 2023 should speak to faculty leaders Milagros Gómez and Andrew Snstad or a Spanish professor. Applications to study in Salamanca are due in February 2023.
