Student groups in Canada welcome the removal of work limits on international students

The Canadian government has temporarily removed the 20-hour work week limit for international students from November 15, 2022 to December 31, 2023. The reason behind doing this was the labor shortage in Canada. Students groups are happy with this news as it will help international students to overcome their financial burden and the move will also help in bridging the labor shortage in Canada.

Nikoi, an external executive at the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS), is very excited about this move for international students.

“There are two sides to working limits, you know,” says Nikoi. “First of all, given the time we are in, and how expensive everything is, this is a really great decision because ever since inflation has hit the market for students to buy things or live in an affordable environment, Since then living in Canada has become somewhat difficult… so, the limit that has been removed for international students is a very good decision. We are glad that this is happening.”

British Columbia Federation of Students (BCFS) chairperson Melissa Chirino has also been hoping for work limits to be lifted for years. She says it is a good first step in the right direction for international students to support themselves and choose a work environment in which they feel safe. However, much work still remains to be done.

Melissa went on to say that “we’ve been asking for years to remove the work limit”. “It’s a very good step, but we also know that there is a lot of work that still needs to be done.”

Chirino also says the next step is to regulate tuition fees for international students so they can live in Canada without struggling to pay the high cost of their studies.

Chirino also said that “we believe the next step includes reducing the cost of studding”. “Students, in general, are struggling with the cost of education… I think sometimes people forget that not all international students have a lot of money left over to pay their international fees which Keeps rising with higher rent prices… Hopefully, in future, we can reduce the fees and make it more sustainable for all to get their education.”

All international students are appalled by the removal of work limits in Canada, and this commendable work by the Canadian government is being praised. Canada’s Carolina C. writes in a post on LinkedIn that “Hello International Students and recruiters who want to hire us! There is great news! We are no longer limited to 20 hours/week off-campus work during the academic year. This temporary measure has been announced this morning to help address labor shortages in Canada. Many thanks to the Canadian government. For some of us, this will be a life changing opportunity!
